The mutual union of Tiv people is organised under the auspices of The Mdzough u Tiv (MUT) Worldwide. MUT has chapter all over the world and meets in several state chapters and branches across the Nigerian federation with its headquarters in the Tivnation capital of Goko, Benue State in Nigeria. It is the umbrella body of Tiv people residing in Kaduna State.
It was on Saturday, 5th July 2025, that the entire Tiv people of Kaduna under the aegis of Mdzough u Tiv (MUT) Kaduna converged in the south of Kaduna city to honour one of their own, Chief Solomon Kwaghkule. The kinsmen invited him for double honours. Chief Solomon Kwaghkule was crowned the “Ikyalen i Tiv Kaduna state” accompanied by a descriptive plaque.
The event was in recognition of his efforts at Tiv unification at various stages; constantly identifying with the Tiv anywhere he finds himself and philanthropical contributions to the collective cause, and assisting individuals who may be in need.
In his acceptance speech, he pledged that part of his social responsibility, he will immensely support the Tiv Community in Kaduna State toward achieving the Ate-u-Tiv construction project.
Legend has it that, long ago, because the Tiv were resilient, hardworking farmers and were prosperous, they attracted envy and enmity from the neighbouring tribes. Thus, their fortunes stood the danger of dwindling, so they had to move and resettle in a more friendly environment. But as they set out on the journey, these aggressive neighbours went into pursuit.
The Tiv in their flight came to a dead end at the bank of a large river where they could not cross; death from the attackers was imminent.
Suddenly, a green and harmless snake known as “ikyalen” in Tiv language, appeared and went ahead of them to spread its entire length across the river, bank to bank. The Tiv realising that the snake was attempting to help them, carefully began to cross on the back of this large, mysterious but friendly snake until they were safely on the other side of the river; the snake then swam away.
When the antagonists arrived at the bank of the river, alas, too late! They spotted the Tiv at a distance, walking away from the river. Since they could not cross, they retreated,d and the Tiv continued their trip safely.
The “Ikyalen i Tiv Kaduna” is the bridge and building bloc of the Tiv people of Kaduna State.
